I played sports my whole life, so fitness has been a passion of mine from a young age; basketball, softball, soccer, crew, skiing, I did it or tried it all. However, I didn't always have the healthiest relationship with exercise and nutrition; many years were spent trying to achieve an unrealistic image of "beauty." I became an NSCA certified personal trainer in 2008, which gave me a solid foundation for my fitness journey. After serving in the US Coast Guard and suffering several injuries, I struggled to accept what my body could no longer do. For years, I cycled through progress in and out of the gym, making improvements, pushing myself too far to get back to where I once was, and then aggravating my joints/injuries all over again. Through sports and the military, I learned to ignore what my body was telling me.
After my discharge from the military in 2014, I began working towards my life-long goal of becoming a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse and finally, in 2019, I received my RN license. In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, I accepted my first job as a NICU nurse and was able to help the tiniest of lives. I loved being a NICU nurse (and still do!), but quickly was headed for burn-out working nights and days and putting the hospital ahead of myself. Spending long hours on my feet aggravated my injuries. My physical and mental health suffered at the hands of a job I loved. It took a trip to Costa Rica, and much soul-searching, to realize I needed to make some changes and I knew I wasn't alone in this.
I completed a yoga teacher training in December, 2022 (back in Costa Rica!) and finally learned to listen to my body. Yoga has given me the balance I so desperately needed, in my mental and physical health. I no longer "GO! GO! GO!" all the time. I still go to the gym and lift weights, but I no longer care that I can't lift as much as I used to. I balance my gym days with my yoga days and found ways to control my pain.
My life calling is to help people and I wanted to continue to do so, but in a more holistic manner, for myself and others. Through a continuing education program, I dove into the realm of Health and Wellness Coaching. I learned a lot about myself and how best to help my clients. I learned the importance of listening to what is and isn't being said. I learned what it takes to make changes that endure. I learned how to help someone else tap into their own strengths, values, and past wins to achieve that sustainable change. We learn from every experience in life and we can use these lessons to leverage success; whatever that may look like for us. Health is something very personal and very individualized, I would love to help you on your journey to "find your flow."
